Discover the Secret . . .
A great recreation community.
The private lake was started in 1963 when hundreds of local citizens joined together to design and build a private recreation lake just a few miles north of Unionville, Missouri, off Highway 5.
The lake dammed Blackbird Creek and backed water to one mile from the Iowa border. The lake covers 1,050 acres of water, 34 miles of shoreline and is approximately 7 miles in length.
In the early 1970's, Spring Beauty, Blazing Star and Golden Aster Additions were developed with a total of 467 lake lots. In the 1990's Meadow Rue, Willow Brooke, and Prairie Rose were developed with a total of 478 lots.

There is no hunting allowed at Lake Thunderhead. However, northern Missouri has a national reputation for excellent hunting. There are approximately 30,000 acres of state forest hunting ground within a 30-minute drive of the lake.
Fishing: is a popular activity at the lake. It has been professionally stocked with bass, crappie, walleye, bluegill and catfish. The depth of the lake is 27 to 32 feet with numerous coves averaging 8 to 10 feet. The lake has many natural springs, a dense shad population and established coontail habitat that make for excellent fishing. Bass and walleye average 2.5 to 3 lbs., with some much larger. Crappie average ½ to ¾ lbs., with some being caught up to 16 inches or more. Catfish average 3-4 lbs., with some being caught up to 15 lbs. or more on rod and reel, lines, and jugs between sunset and sunrise. The entire family can enjoy fishing from a pontoon boat. We have one of the best, all around fishing lakes in Iowa and Missouri. Property owners can test their skills at tournaments held annually.
